For skip hire companies

Rated Skip Hire lists 778 companies across 190 towns. Every company is listed free, and no company can pay to move up the ranking. Here is how the site works and what you can ask us.

How the ranking works

Each town page ranks the companies whose Google Maps address is in that town by a score that weights the Google rating by the number of reviews: score = (reviews × rating + 20 × 4.5) ÷ (reviews + 20). A company with few reviews is pulled towards 4.5 until it earns more. The rating and the review count are read from Google Maps on the date shown on the page. Nothing else moves the order.

Companies that Google Maps returns for a town but whose address is elsewhere appear under “Also listed by Google Maps for …”, with their town, in the same score order and without a rank.

How to get listed

We read Google Maps for “skip hire in town”. At the moment a company is listed when its Google Maps name contains “skip” and it has at least 10 Google reviews. If that is you and you are missing, tell us which town and we will check at the next reading.

How to correct your plate

  • Phone, address, opening hours, website: correct them on your Google Business Profile; we pick up the change at the next reading. We do not edit these by hand, so that every plate says what Google Maps says.
  • Register: if your plate shows no registration number, or says “match to be confirmed”, and you hold an Environment Agency registration, send us your registered name and CBDU number. We check it on the public register and link it.
  • Prices: we read prices only from your own website, with the date. If you publish a price list, tell us where it is.
  • Removal: write to us from a company address and we remove the plate within 30 days.

Sponsored boards

Each town page has one board marked “Sponsored”, outside the ranking. It never changes the ranking, and it is the only paid space on the page apart from clearly labelled advertising. There is one board per town. The price is not published yet: ask and say which town.

What we never do

  • Sell a position in the ranking, or a star.
  • Write that a company is unregistered: a plate without a registration number means we have not matched the entry yet.
  • Invent a price: a plate shows a price only when we read it on the company’s own website, with the date.
